Taanach 5: A letter from Amanhatpa to Talwashur
This is the third post in my series of translations and comments on the Taanach letters. Don't worry about the number. It is the number of the tablet. The more or less complete letters are Taanach 1, 2, 5 and 6. The first post in the series has a few preliminary comments. I'm also building a link list to this series there. This post is a translation of the second of the Taanach letters.

Hello,
I was wondering if you could tell me the translation of the word 'Taanach.' I found a translation on a Baby-names website that it meant [He] who humbles thee, who sees thee. Thank you so much,
Keren

Keren,
It's hard to tell what many of these old names mean or even what language the came from. If Taanach is Semitic in origin and I think that the best guess, then it may mean something like "He who makes you bow" or "He who makes you humble." But this is little more than a guess. But remember that while we know and understand the meaning of some place names like Philadelphia, we are not so clear on the meaning of other place names like Oxnard (I think it was named after someone). And names often become detached from their etymological history even more readily than other words.
