The Leviticus Scroll Fragments: How Much Material is Needed for Testing?

With all my shoveling and spreading and the resulting aches and pains, I'm really behind the times on a number of things. One thing I haven't commented on is the latest flap about the testing that was done on the Leviticus scroll fragments. I won't have a lot to say here. I think Tyler Williams at Codex has had the best coverage but others have said some important things.

If you look at Tyler's before and after picture of the larger fragment, it's a little hard to understand why so much material was needed to do analyze the parchment. This has more the look of vandalism than science. You may remember that Hanan Eshel reporting finding the two fragments about two years ago. Amir Ganor of the Antiquities Authority is leading various studies to determine the authenticity of the scroll fragments. Ganor thinks they are fakes. If you read the Haaretz article, you'll see why. Eshel maintains their authenticity. As for me, I have no idea. I do think that the Israel Antiquities Authority seems to be on a bit of a crusade.
