Two Related Unrelated Items
Or is it two unrelated related items?
PZ Myers at Pharyngula has an abnormally interesting post partly on the Straussian hypocrisy in the UK and partly on the Sea of Faith. These two things are related. On The Sea of Faith, he concludes,
It looks like [The Sea of Faith is] really for people who are clever enough to see the absurdity of religion, but too gutless to walk away from it.
Give PZ' post a careful read.
And then, sort of unrelated, Jim Davila at PaleoJudaica.com tells us about a Haaretz article concerning an exhibit of some of Isaac Newton's theological and apocalyptic writings. It turns out that Sir Isaac calculated that the world will end in 2060! I say it won't but I don't have my calculations readily at hand. Perhaps this is the real source of Frank Tipler's predictions on the time of Jesus' return. Tipler used relativistic physics and quantum mechanics and Newton used Daniel 12:7 and the establishment of the Holy Roman Empire by Charlemagne in 800 (One year plus two year and a half of a years ≈ 1260 days which Newton converted to years [but see Revelation 11:3, 12:6 and 13:5 {forty two months} where "1260 days" is clearly intended with regard to something or some things] and added this to 800 CE.) Miracle of miracles, these two scientists applied their mathematical skills and got the same answer within two or three years. Newton and Tipler were and are great physicists but they are at best late 17th century theologians.
