God's Floods

There's major flooding in some parts of the UK and a couple of Bishops know why.

The summer floods are God's judgment on the immorality and greed of modern society, claim senior Church of England bishops. [Telegraph]

The Telegraph article also contains this little gem from the lips of Bishop of Liverpool, the Right Reverent James Jones,

People no longer see natural disasters as an act of God. However, we are now reaping what we have sown. If we live in a profligate way then there are going to be consequences. God is exposing us to the truth of what we have done.

Now if the Anglican Bishops were only talking about global warming all this might be understandable even if bad science and some might think bad theology. But that isn't the only thing they have in mind,

We are reaping the consequences of our moral degradation, as well as the environmental damage that we have caused.

Hmmm, "moral degradation" and "decadence" gets all mixed up with "environmental damage." I believe that environmental damage is the result of immoral actions. But that isn't what is meant here. The Right Reverent Graham Dow, Bishop of Carlisle "said that the introduction of pro-gay laws had provoked God to send the storms that have left thousands homeless [emphasis added]." God must be really upset with Texas right now too.

How can anyone worship a God like the one Right Reverent Dow worships? Read the whole Telegraph article. It's short.

I felt it only fair to put some more words in the bishop's mouth on my comment “The Lord,” said the bishop, “is so upset by it all that his hand is shaking with rage, and so his aim is a bit off.”

Here is my take.

Perhaps if you don't worship him he'll come round and smash the neighbours' windows?

God is punishing Texas for spawning George Bush....we'd repent if we could, but half of us prefer to stand their ground and the other half enjoy the other half getting their comeuppance for having voted for him. Of course, you might be right. Maybe we're being punished because W is gay.....
