Peer Review and Blogging - Discussing and Being Discussed

A considerable amount of academic blogging involves discussion of the peer-reviewed work of others. Bloggers for Peer-Reviewed Research Reporting is sponsoring an Icon Contest. Here's what they say about it,

Contest participants will design a universal icon that everyone can use on their blog posts whenever the post is a serious commentary about a paper published in a peer-reviewed journal, and not just a link to a press release or media commentary.

This seem like a good idea to me. I recommend that everyone take a look at the Bloggers for Peer-Reviewed Research Reporting blog. Much of this is being driven by scientists but I think serious humanists may have place in the process.

But on occasion, a peer reviewed paper may cite or otherwise use a blog post. I think another post aggregation project that might be of considerable interest would a linked list of blog posts cited in peer-reviewed papers or reprinted with little or no modification in journals or professional newsletters. A typical entry would have the post with a link and the bibliographic information of the article in which it was cited with a link to the article if it is online. For example,

Right now, for this purpose, I don't want to quibble too much about what constitutes the use of a blog post in a peer-reviewed context. Book reviews in outlets like the Review of Biblical Literature and invited papers and articles when the invitations comes from peers both count in my mind.

Without a lot of work, the above are the only two I could think of on my own. But I'm sure there are many more. Let me know if your blog post has been cited or otherwise found its way into print. I'm thinking of doing a round up ever week or month or whatever as examples are accumulated. At some point, a more formal approach may be called for.
