I'd Want to See His Driver's License Before Getting in the Car With This Guy
One of the best ongoing series on the internet is Afarensis' "Know Your Primate" series. Every week Afarensis brings us another abnormally interesting primate. Each post has great pictures and a description of the featured species. This week's primate is the adorable Ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta). These animals are very high on the cuteness scale even if there is a little "infanticide during mating season" here and there. Get over to Afarensis' place and check out the Ring-tailed lemur.
Not to be outdone, I thought I'd do a primate feature myself. Here is a Chacma Baboon (Papio ursinus ursinus) getting into his car after a pleasant day in the South African countryside.

Well, it's not exactly his car. And he may be having a pleasant enough day but real owner to the car isn't. These baboons are protected around South Africa's Southern Cape Peninsula and some troops have become a problem for another, somewhat larger, primate species. The problem has been around for a while and you can read about it at a couple of sites. I first heard about the problem on my local CBS News this evening. In fact, the picture is a screen shot from CBS2 News. This looks like another case of our species encroaching on the territory of another species and then being upset when they push back. Actually, there are a number of complex issues that brought this conflict about but none of them were the fault of the baboons.
