Is This a Tax Deduction or a Tax Credit?
Every so often, I need to visit the Charles E. Young Research Library at UCLA. I hadn't made the pilgrimage for several months, but over those months I accumulated enough abnormal references to justify the trip across town. Between my own library and the two research libraries in Claremont, I have easy access to most things, but not everything. So I went to UCLA this morning.
I found what I needed, made a few notes then decided to copy a couple of things that didn't lend themselves to quick note taking. In the copy room, I was confronted with something new and not good. My UCLA Library Copy Card no longer worked. I still had about $10.00 on/in my old Capy Card. The old system had been replaced with a new one.

Now I needed a UCLA BruinCard for visitors. After a visit to the information desk, two things were apparent. First, there was no way to transfer any funds I had in the now obsolete Library Copy Card and it was going to cost me $0.58 to get a BruinCard.

If it were only the $0.58, I would have written it off as the cost of doing business. But losing about $10.00 made me none too happy. Not that I don't have the money. If asked, I might even be willing to make a contribution to the library. Rather, if I'm going to make a contribution to the fair State of California, even a small one, I'd like to know it upfront and I'd like to be able to claim it against my income taxes.
Did I mention that the cost of parking was two bucks higher?
