What to Do?
Today we received a letter from a company with whom we do business. They wanted to tell us about their privacy policy and ask us if we desired to change anything with regard to that policy. The cover letter contained this paragraph.
For your convenience, we have included your current privacy choices at the bottom of this letter. If you wish to make a change to your current privacy choices, please see the enclosed form entitled "Important Privacy Choices for Consumers". If you do not wish to make any changes, simply keep this document for your own records. [Emphasis in blue added]
We were happy with our current choices: they can't "share" with anyone. Since we didn't want to change anything we should have never read the "enclosed form." But we did anyway. Here is a paragraph from that form.
Time Sensitive Reply
You may make your privacy choice(s) at any time. Your choice(s) marked here will remain unless you state otherwise. However, if we do not hear from you, we may share some of your information with affiliated companies and other companies with whom we have contracts to provide products and services. [Emphasis in blue added]
Now, I suppose that the cover letter takes precedence over the form, but I do worry about this small ambiguity.
