Depleting the Language
Alun Salt has a hilarious post on things you might get sued for writing. It seems that the 2011 plus 1 Organizing Committee of some famous international games thinks it owns a UK copyright on the year after 2011 and the widely known title of those games. It is also concerned about anyone who wants to use a common way of writing the capital of the UK followed by the year after 2011. Alun worries it "could seriously impact classical studies in the year after AD 2011." The whole thing is unmentionable and somewhat worrying but not unreadable.

Strange, I was just thinking about how copyright gets in the way of historical knowledge, and now this. What I was recently pondering is how silently insidious copyright is in obscuring history in another way: by making it difficult to distribute photos of historical artifacts, for example, for fear of legal repercussions from the owner of the photos. And yet, history is ironically supposed to be in public domain, isn't it? Well, I'm a silly twat, aren't I? All this time, I was owned by the Olymp*c committee ;) I kinda suspected but now I know it's true, hehe.
