Follow the Money

There has been quite a discussion on the Ancient Near East (ANE-2) list server of the ancient seal I mentioned the other day. I won't go into all the ins and outs of that discussion here. One thing that Peter van der Veen said struck a cord.

I am afraid that archaeology has entered a stage where supervisors can only say what their audiences (better financial donators) wish to hear. I do not criticize this as I know how difficult it is to finance important dig over many years. But what academic contribution can these expeditions yield? Surely there must be a way to solve this troublesome issue.

I have worried about this possibility for some time. I'm not sure how much the concern applies to archaeology in general but I do think it may be a continuing problem with archaeology of the southern Levant. However, I don't think it is a new problem.
