Chris Heard Is Using Strong Language

“Charlatan,” “twaddle” he exclaims while decrying an upcoming movie from the same folks who brought us The Secret.

Chris' degradation into such talk reminded me of another film that I once saw. In 1973, a fellow Gezerite and I were stuck in Athens for four days. This was the result of "free" flight arrangements home from Israel setup by someone else with more complex motives than simply getting home ASAP. In previous years, we had visited most of the archaeological sites in and around Athens and most of the museums. Besides, we just wanted to get home after almost three month's work at Gezer. So we decided to go to a movie to pass the time. If the sole reason for going to a movie is to pass time, it really doesn't matter what movie one goes to. We went to the first one we encountered.

The movie had already started when we found our seats. As best I could tell, the plot centered on two warring women's motorcycle gangs in Tokyo. The movie was in Japanese with Greek, French, and English subtitles. The subtitles more or less filled the screen.

Within a very few minutes of sitting down, we were entertained by the sight of a young women, tied to a post in a garage, being beaten with motorcycle chains across her bare, ah, chest. According to the English subtitles, she was crying out in her anger and in her pain, "Darn it! Darn it!"

The other subtitles must have been better. My friend and I were the only ones in the theater laughing hysterically. The locals became restless and we decided to pass the time elsewhere.
