Off to SBL Pacific Coast Regional Meeting

Tomorrow and Monday, I will be at the joint West Coast meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature, American Schools of Oriental Research and the American Academy of Religion at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. My heathen readers have no reason to worry; we will be better represented than you might think.

I was rehearsing my paper and giving my handout a final review when I discovered something that almost stopped my heart. I had the following on my handout for the second part of 1 Samuel 25:22

מַשְׁתִּין בְּקִיר אִם אַשְׁאִיר מִכָּל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ עַד הַבֹּקֶר

Just in case your Hebrew is a little rusty, it should read,

אִם אַשְׁאִיר מִכָּל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ עַד הַבֹּקֶר מַשְׁתִּין בְּקִיר

It looked okay in my paper. But I'm sure that when I first drafted the paper several months ago I introduced a left to right space (you know, the one you normally get when you hit the space bar) when I should have used a right to left space (the one you get if you are using a Hebrew or Arabic keyboard setup). This always causes bad things to happen when you cut and paste.

The real effort has been getting the presentation version of my paper down to twenty minutes. It turns out that I can easily give a quite coherent version of the paper in five minutes and a more expansive version in about 30 minutes. But a twenty-minute version has proven difficult. However, my last two run throughs have been nineteen minutes and eighteen minutes, so I think I now am on the right track. Sometime after my presentation on Monday, I'm provide a link to the complete paper.

I often times also have problems with that twenty minute mark. It's a weird place to end an argument.

Good luck with the paper!

Some time soon, perhaps we can trade papers -- since I still owe you a copy of mine from the national meeting in November.
