Why I Blog

After offering his own explanation, Iyov has invited fellow bloggers to explain why they blog. At the highest level I blog because I don't enjoy working crossword puzzles. I am told and choose to believe that a long happy retirement is helped by keeping mentally active so I blog rather than work crossword puzzles.

But it's not quite as simple as that. During my business career, I hoped that in retirement I could return to the study of things Near Eastern or one of my other abnormal interests. I also knew that my business career and my lack of a PhD would prevent me from becoming a professional academic. A blog provides an outlet for my renewed studies and other continuing interests, an opportunity to meet in the blogoshere, and sometimes in person, many people who share some of my abnormal interests and from whom I have learned and whose virtual company I immensely enjoy. An active blog, even one of negligible importance, can be a cruel taskmaster. It enforces a discipline from which I profit as I seek to remain mentally active while avoiding crossword puzzles.

Duane, those are all good reasons for blogging.
