Congratulations (Full) Professor Jim Davila
Jim Davila's blog, PaleoJudaica.com, is one I check everyday. It is an important source of news and comment on several of my own abnormal interests. St Mary’s College, University of St Andrews, Scotland just promoted Jim to Full Professor of Early Jewish Studies. Part of his brief note on this milestone event said,
I did mention my blogging in the promotion application under innovative teaching, but I doubt it was the deciding factor.
Considering some of the rumors that one hears, the good news in that blogging didn't stand in the way his promotion. I hope the day will come when no academic need worry about negative blow back from using modern media to participation in scholarly discussion and public communications. Jim's blog is an example of the kind of work that may well bring about a time when providing a public forum becomes a common "deciding factor" in academic promotions.
Congratulations Jim and thanks for sharing the news and your abnormally interesting thoughts with the blogging and blog reading community.
