Evolutionary Novelties
Todd Oakley is Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of California-Santa Barbara. He works in ecology, evolution and marine biology and serves as the Assistant Curator at the Museum of Systematics and Ecology at UCSB. He also has a relatively new blog called Evolutionary Novelties. What I like most about it so far are the clear explanations of basic evolutionary concepts. Today's post is about common descent but I think I enjoyed his post "Evolution of Random: Random of Evolution" best. In this post he deals, in a nonmathematical way, with how a couple of the common street definitions of "random" differ from the way the word is used by biologists (and others) and how this can cause considerable misunderstanding. Very good stuff.
