Ugarit-Forschungen 38 Has Arrived

In the RSS feed announcing the latest volume of Ugarit-Forschungen, James Spinti of Eisenbrauns, wrote,

I don't know about you, but when I was in graduate school, one of my favorite times was whenever the newest Ugarit Forschungen was released. I would pore over the table of contents to see what might be relevant to my latest project.

Ugarit-Forschungen 38 (2007)So true! And it is still true now some thirty years since I was a graduate student. And just as it was when I was a graduate student, at $180.00, I will wait until it arrives on the shelves of my local research library. That said, several of the articles have already aroused my abnormal interests.

Merijn Gantzert's four installments on the Syrian Lexical Texts will be at the top of my list but not too far behind will be Richard Hess' "Cultural Aspects of Onomastic Distribution throughout Southern Canaan in light of New Evidence;" Wilfred van Soldt, "Studies on the sakinu-Official (3): The sakinu of other Ugaritic towns and of the palace and the queen's house, and the findspots of the tablet;" and, Eric Ortlund's "Intentional Ambiguity in Old Testament and Ugaritic Descriptions of Divine Conflict;" and, and . . .

Let me make one thing clear. The price is not Eisenbrauns' fault. Its Ugarit-Verlag's fault and it may even be a fair price. Eisenbrauns needs to make a living and I don't begrudge them that. I do worry that Ugarit-Verlag has set their price to resellers on the assumption of a market limited to research libraries and a few scholars with significant book allowances. I'm really not sure what the price elasticity is but I am sure that at $180.00 the market is limited to research libraries and a few scholars with significant book allowances. While many of the papers interest me and I will read them, several do not and I factor that into my purchasing decisions. And then there's our family policy. We have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy on anything under a certain amount. But for purchases costing more than that, we consult with each other about the purchase. Ugarit-Forschungen 38 is almost double the "don't ask, don't tell" threshold and I'm not sure I can really justify purchasing it in the light of other economic considerations during such a consultation.

Some times one people don’t have any interesting topic to blog about than they pick up some very silly topic and start blogging. This type of attempt of the people always helps to attract a lot of traffic and make the people laugh a bit.
