With Just One Exception He Taught Values

I don't know if you've been following the news of John Freshwater and his pedagogical exploits. Mr. Freshwater is was a middle school science teacher in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Today the Mount Vernon School Board fired him for teaching creationism in his classroom (read "not teaching science") and for promoting a sectarian religion (read "Christianity" or at least a form of it) in his classroom and for occasionally burning a cross on a student's arm. According to news reports, he was not without his defenders.

Freshwater's friend Dave Daubenmire defended him.

"With the exception of the cross-burning episode. ... I believe John Freshwater is teaching the values of the parents in the Mount Vernon school district.

I'm not at all sure what the "values of the parents in the Mount Vernon school district" might be but the values Mr. Freshwater taught were disrespect for the Constitution; disrespect for and ignorance of science; disrespect for the curriculum; and the value of disfigurement in the name of religion. I'm glad to see that his friend thinks one of those values may be just a little off base for a public school teacher.

The Columbus Dispatch has a picture of one student's arm with the results of Mr. Freshwater's work and more details on what went on in his classroom.

This is why I sometimes worry about the future of the human species. At some point, I really think the "sane" will have to branch away from the "clearly insane", off on some new and better evolutionary path while Darwinian processes "fix" the latter group, shall we say :-)

Personally, I'd rather not be "forced into a rapture" with a fundy-provoked nuclear bomb blast that rudely interrupts my pleasant beauty sleep one night. Who's with me???
