Selective Quotation

Yesterday I noted a common misquotation of Mark Twain that Barach Obama perpetuated. Ed Brayton at Dispatches From the Culture Wars points out a rather glairing omission from a Thomas Jefferson quotation. This time President Bush "forgot" to say "under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves" when he quoted Jefferson,

May it be to the world, what I believe it will be, (to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all,) the signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government. [emphasis added]

This is not a trivial omission. Ed has more details.
