So This is an Improvement
I made my occasional pilgrimage to UCLA today. I had accumulated several things I wanted to look into at their library.
Parking is always a bit of an experience. In the past, you purchased a one-day parking permit at a kiosk. This permit allowed you to park in a rather complex, multi-floored parking structure that was, relatively speaking, near the library. You could also come and go as you pleased.
Well, today I found that things have changed. I arrived at the usual kiosk and was told in the most upbeat tones that they were now using a new machine payment system, that I should go to the usual structure, park in any otherwise unreserved spot, find a machine and pay with cash or credit card. I was further told that if the first machine I found was covered I should go to another machine. At the time, exactly why I needed this piece of advice was a little beyond me.
I decided to find an uncovered machine and park as near it as I could. This turned out to be a good decision. The first two machines I passed were covered. For the next fifteen minutes or so, I drove up and around and down and then up and halfway down another part of the structure before I found the next parking fee payment machine. Luckily, it was not covered. As far as I could tell, it was the only operational machine in the whole structure. The closest parking space was a hundred feet up the ramp and around the corner. I noted my space number, walked to the machine, paid the fee, walked back to my car and put the receipt on the dashboard.
Did I mention that with new system the cost of parking is now $9.00 a day, two dollars higher than the old system? Oh yeah, one other thing, if you give up your space for any reason, you get to pay again, no return privileges.
And still another thing, I went today to avoid the hordes of students that will inundate the place next month. Guess what? Today was some kind of an orientation day and there were thousands of kids, seemly organized in groups of ten. They all decided to go to lunch about two minutes before I did.
I did manage to find several abnormally interesting things that I'll share over the next few days.

Yeah, the students are starting to clog up the works here, too.
