Correcting A Possible False Impression

For abnormal reasons, I was looking through the preface of Gezer III and found the following paragraph that might give a false impression,

The supervisory staff of Field VII West, under the direction of the author, were Chris Balcer, Pat Baublitz, Claire Harwig, Larry Herr, Suzanne Rohaly, Dr. John Salmon and Dr. James Weinstein in 1972, and Neal Bierling, Pat Baublitz, Don Hobson, Duane E. Smith and Dr. James Weinstein as Assistant Field Archaeologist in 1973. [page x, emphasis added]

I do not believe that I worked in Field VII for more than a few days in 1973 or any other time. I spent nearly all of that season in Field II.

The only substantive contribution I remember making to the work in Field VII came late in the 1973 season and lasted no more than one hour. Under the direct leadership of Seymour Gitin, Field Archaeologist in charge, several of us attempted a controlled de-excavation of a controversial, freshly opened, area on the western edge of Field VII. Using flashlights for illumination, we made our attempt well after lights out in camp. Our efforts were not completely successful. Some other members of the staff along with a platoon of volunteers, people who should have been sound asleep, mistakenly thought we were midnight looters trying to excavate illegally the as yet uncovered treasures of Gezer. In truth, while only top soil was involved, we were trying to do exactly the opposite. This band of do-gooders wielded hoes and picks and projected a certain aggressive mean spiritedness. They quickly put a stop to our little de-excavation. If Sy wants to give me credit for being part of that effort, I will gladly take it but no more.

You're not completely sure what a controlled de-excavation is or why anyone would want to do one. Well, I'm not saying anymore than I've already said.
