The Finest Facilities

As a break from other things, I continue to scan my old 35mm slides. I found this gem a little while ago.

Latrine on the way to the Mitla Pass, 1971

I took this picture in August of 1971. We were on our way to the Mitla Pass. It was the first day of a four day tour of the Sinai. I've discussed this trip before. On the surface, the picture shows the remains of an Egyptian military vehicle on its side with some women standing behind it and near it. In the background is a small Israeli military installation.

But to those of us who were there, that overturned vehicle was the only shelter we had while taking care of certain natural processes. After several hours on the road, pressure was building for a potty break. But, for reasons of his own, our driver didn't like any of the options until he saw that overturned vehicle. He brought our bus to a rather abrupt stop and proclaimed, "Women first!" I don't suppose any of the solders at that camp had binoculars or cameras with telephoto lenses.
