Among The Lesser Reasons I Am Not A Theist

"Our great God is not surprised by this, or anything," Nate Adams, executive director of the Illinois Baptist State Association, said in a statement. "That He allows evil and free will to have their way in tragedies like this is a mystery in many ways. But we know we can trust Him no matter what, and draw close to Him in any circumstances." [Associated Press via Huffington Post]

This incoherent statement came in the wake of the shooting of a pastor and the knifing of two parishioners during church services this morning at the First Baptist Church in Maryville, Illinois. The pastor died. The real mystery is how anyone can say something like this. But then, the statement does not surprise me.

Incoherence is often the child of grief but theism is as often its other parent.

These tragic events highlight the dilemma of an anthropomorphic god conceived around ideas of human ‘goodness’. Those affected have to deal not only with the grief and shock, but also with the impact such events have on their perception of god.
I imagine that it must be difficult to give thanks and praise to god in such circumstances.

I read this report, and I thought: The big mistake of the most popular verse in the KJV just keeps rolling along. KJV: "Though he slay me , yet will I trust in him." But as we know one should read the written text: "So, he will kill me; I have no hope." Job 13:15a

Duane - slightly off topic but I wonder if you know Richard Beck's site. Experimental Theology. He is doing a series on the theology of monsters that you might enjoy.

That's a pretty good reason.
