The Last Couple Standing
Saturday evening Shirley and I went to a 25th anniversary party for her brother and his wife. It was great fun. As is common at these affairs, a speaker asked all the married couples to stand. Then she asked those who had been married five years or less to sit down, then those who had been married ten years of less and by the time she got to 40 years of less, Shirley and I were the only ones standing. This seemed quite a wonderful thing to those present and there was applause and other nonsense. As we were leaving, one woman even asked for a kiss. Amazing (not the kiss but the request).
To us, having been married 44 years seems like the most normal thing in the world. How it will feel at 45 is still an unknown.
If you wonder about the lack posts on my usual abnormal interests, I'm in the final stage of preparing a paper for resubmission to a publisher. Over the weekend, I finished addressing the last of the referees' gripes suggestions. Two of those suggestions turned out to be little more than wild goose chases. But chasing wild geese takes time and energy. This morning I rechecked all the Hebrew references and quotations. This afternoon I will do the same for the Akkadian and Ugaritic references. The next thing will be to incorporate the last of Shirley's gripes about the paper. As I've told a couple of friends, when I first wrote this thing, it was a lark, now it sure seems like work. Perhaps one of the reasons that Shirley and I are still together is that she is still willing to proofread my papers and I am still willing to let her do it.
