Biblical Scholars and Personal Religion: A New Blog; A New Project
Yesterday, Alan Lenzi of Bible and Ancient Near East introduced a new project and a new blog, Biblical Scholars and Personal Religion. Here's a little of what Alan has to say about the project and the new blog,
This blog is a forum for biblical scholars to present their story of the interaction between their professional interests and their personal religion. Some scholars describe how they have lost their faith. Others recount how their faith was tested and refined. Irregardless of the direction of the journey, the presentations are personal, reflective, and honest. The contributors have written them for the benefit of others who may be struggling to make sense of similar issues.
At some point, I may offer a contribution but not right away. First, it's not completely clear that I meet Alan's definition of a Biblical Scholar: "'Scholars' are individuals who have an earned PhD or are currently PhD ABD in biblical studies or a related field." He does say that he will consider exceptions. Second, and more important, I think the first contributors should meet Allan's definition unequivocally. This project will die an ignoble death, if early contributors are fringe characters like me. But if you have a PhD or nearly so and are an active scholar, I believe your contribution to the project will be abnormally interesting.
