Who Are Your Favorite Early Modern Philosophers?
Brian Leiter wants to know. In fact, he wants his readers to rank a list of twenty-eight 16th to early 19th century philosophers. I normally don't do much philosophy here. With two professional philosophers in the family, it's just too dangerous. But I think the results of this poll could be abnormally interesting. For what it is worth, I ranked Kant first and I must admit that I didn't even recognize a couple of the twenty-eight philosophers on the list. I did recognize the one he left off, Rousseau. Brain promises that Rousseau will be in the runoffs.
In a previous poll of modern philosophers, the top five were Ludwig Wittgenstein, Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, John Stuart Mill and W.V.O. Quine. I would have put Russell first and Wittgenstein quite a bit lower but that's just me. Check out the order of the remaining thirty-five candidates. You might be surprised at a few of the rankings. I was.
