Like Shamash?

The other day I wrote about the use X-Ray CT scanning technology to "unroll" the scrolls from Herculaneum. Somehow, I didn't post the second thought in my original draft. So here it is.

Will these CT scanning researchers become like Shamash?

You can read an unopened encased tablet.

Many encased tablets, tablets with clay envelopes, have the same text on the envelope as on the ecclosed tablet. The ancients likely did this to protect against someone altering the text. One could always break open the envelope and see if the envelope text had been altered. Perhaps because of this possibility, there might be abnormally interesting differences in detail between the envelope and its tablet. But many encased tablets do not have identical texts inside and out. Some envelopes only have sender and recipient information with or without appropriate seals. In either case, it would be nice to be able to read the tablet itself without breaking the envelope.
