Have A Little Time To Waste?
Well, I'm not sure that I do but I often waste more than a little anyway. Here's a way to have a some useless fun. Ever wonder about the position of a string of digits within first 200 million digits of π? There's a website for that. Here are a couple results from my queries.
The string 1234567 occurs at position 9,470,344 counting from the first digit after the decimal point. The 3. is not counted. The string 87654321 occurs at position 2,747,956 counting from the first digit after the decimal point. The 3. is not counted.
Oh yeah, something else of earth shaking importance, Gabrice Bellard has set a new record by calculating π to 2,699,999,990.00 digits. And he used a desktop computer running at 2.93 GHz to do it. It only took 131 days and 1.5 TB of hard disk, not counting backup storage, to finish the job.
