Happy Birthday Huckleberry Finn
Well, happy US publication day to Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. As generally reckoned, February 18, 1885, one hundred twenty five years ago today, Charles L. Webster and Company issued the US publication of what some consider Mark Twain’s finest work. I’m don’t completely agree with that assessment. The real work of the novel ends with Jim’s capture in chapter 31. You can’t just ignore the remaining twelve chapters. Even with those final chapters, I do think it among his five best works. Both banned and extolled, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a milestone work in the history of American literature.
The Canadian and UK publication came in December of the previous year, 1884, also the copyright year. A facsimile of the first US edition (and other Twain first editions) is available online.
