Quotation of 1964

We are all sufferers from history, but the paranoid is a double sufferer, since he is afflicted not only by the real world, with the rest of us, but by his fantasies as well.

Richard Hofstadter wrote this in his Harper’s Magazine, November 1964, essay, “The Paranoid Style in American Politics.” He wrote a lot more in that essay that remains spot-on today. If you haven’t read this essay in a while or if you have never read it, take a look.
