On Not Seeing Your Ears
In "A Fable," Mark Twain has the cat express the moral, "You can find in a text whatever you bring, if you will stand between it and the mirror of your imagination. You may not see your ears, but they will be there."
In a recent post to the Mark Twain Forum Barbara Schmidt reminded subscribers of this observation.
