The Alphabet And Literacy
Is there an enabling relationship between the adoption of an alphabet and literacy? Over at BLT, Suzanne McCarty has an interesting post on the question in which she points to some work by M. A. Powell on the history of cuneiform writing and literacy. I haven’t read Powell’s article as yet but I have added it to my ever growing reading list. Head over to BLT and check it out. Suzanne also links to a couple of abnormal posts.
For the record, I rather doubt that there is a straight forward enabling relationship between the adoption of an alphabet and literacy. I outlined some of my thoughts on the questions in the comments to Suzanne’s post.
