Gonzalo Rubio On Assyriology

“I felt that I needed to work in a field in which I could not only say new things but also see new things.”
While not very deep, the LifeScience Q and A piece with Gonzalo Rubio is interesting. I wonder a little about Rubio’s brief, too brief, comment on official cult religion and popular religion. I do think one can make such a distinction. But I don’t think it can necessarily be made by comparing ritual texts with divination texts and the like. Divination was very official in some quarters. The interview ends with a rather stupid question, “. . . is it likely that spoken languages were around much earlier than this? [i.e. the advent of written Sumerian]” To which Rubio answers in part, “So there was a lot of talking before anyone thought of writing anything down.”
