Is Ludlul Wisdom Literature?

Over at Feeling Finite . . ., Alan Lenzi provides an engaging discussion of “Ludlul and ‘Wisdom’.” From a very strictly “indigenous perspective,” Alan concludes that it isn’t wisdom. But as Alan points out there is more to wisdom than a strictly indigenous perspective, i.e. the more or less official scholarly corpora, the ummânūtu. He notes, “Since the scribal craft itself was equated with the wisdom of Nabû and the totality of scholarship, one could classify any text that was part of the scribal curriculum as “wisdom literature.” This too is an indigenous position, but not as stick as limiting wisdom to the scholarly ummânūtu of divination, exorcism, astrology, lamentation and medicine.
Alan’s discussion is well worth reading.
