Oh The Anxiety Of It All

A searchable preliminary program for the 2011 SBL annual meeting is out and that is the cause of all me consternation. Several time slots have abnormally interesting sessions, while other time slots just seem filled with abnormality without interest.
The 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM timeslot on November 20 has three parallel sessions that I would like to attend. I will likely go to the Ideological Criticism session but it will be hard to miss the session on Biblical Lands and Peoples in archaeology and Text and the Hebrew Scriptures and Cognate Literature session. I have similar problems with the November 21, 9:00 AM to 6:45 AM time slot and the November 22 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM time slot.
The whole thing reminds me of this from Ogden Nash’s “Prayer at the End of a Rope,”
For months, when people entertain,
Me they do not invite;
Then suddenly invitations rain,
All for the self-same night.
R.S.V.P.’s I pray thee send
Alone and not in bunches,
Or teach me I cannot attend
Two dinners or two lunches.
(Or two or three SBL sessions)
Yes, it does apply to my social life as well as the upcoming SBL meeting.
