Things To Remember

This is fundamental to understanding what’s happened to the American economy in recent decades: a little bit of money from a large number of people becomes a very large amount of money when it gets channeled into the bank accounts of a tiny number of wealthy rentiers. [Kevin Drum]

And on a different but in a way related subject,

In a free society, we are supposed to know the truth. In a society where truth becomes treason, we are in big trouble. [Ron Paul Tweet]

I don’t always agree with Ron Paul but he is absolutely correct about this. Heck, I don’t always agree with Kevin Drum or anyone else I can think of.

  1. I have a few friends who despise Wiki Leaks, and want everyone involved strung up at the first opportunity possible. However, I’m not sure where I should fall on this. On one hand, Wiki Leaks promotes more open governments around the world, and where we don’t have the “truth becomes treason” than Paul speaks of. On the other hand, I can see where it can be dangerous, particularly if leaked information reveals a way to easily kill the troops sent out to fight by a government. So… ?
On Kevin Drum’s statement, I got caught up on the fancy French looking word (and google says, indeed, it is) “rentiers” just to find it’s what I call “rentees” (but google just told me that that-word is the same as “renters”). I need to work on my vocab, apparently. I’ll have to read Drum’s article to get the full context of his statement.

  2. With all things being equal, secrecy can be just as dangerous as openness. The benefit of openness however is at least one knows what dangers one faces. Ignorance simply leads to powerlessness. (Now, whether Wikileaks is a legitimate “whistle-blower” or just another mirage created for the purposes of sensationalist media is beyond my capacity to ascertain. All I know is that I’m turning my TV off a lot more and tuning out to this external fearmongering garbage that has nothing to do with my personal life and does little to fix the troubled economy or environment. Are you all being side-tracked perhaps?)
